There are many ways you can serve up homemade yogurt.
Not only can you try different ingredients, but there are also various cooking methods you can use.
Flavored Yogurt
Ingredients
- 1/3 cup of sugar, honey, or choco syrup
- 1/3 cup of molasses
- 1/3 cup of malt
- 1/3 cup of nonfat milk
- Whole milk (1 quart)
Instructions
Scald the milk. Put the chosen sweetener in a cup and stir it. Allow the sugar to dissipate before adding any more flavoring.
Among the most popular choices are lemon juice, coffee, and mint.
Whichever you choose, just put in a teaspoon of the extract. Place it in the yogurt-making machine and follow the instructions.
Ways of Making Homemade Yogurt
First, you prepare the ingredients. For the most basic, milk and plain yogurt are all that’s needed. Add more flavorings if you want. Here are your options for making them.
The easiest method is with the yogurt machine. Just put in all the ingredients and follow the instructions as set down. You can also use a thermos. Put milk in it and heat it up to 100 F.
Next, add the yogurt and other ingredients. Put the cover on and wrap it with towels. Leave it in a warm area overnight.
You can also make homemade yogurt in the oven. Put some milk in the dish. Add 2 tablespoons of the yogurt.
Stir and put a lid on the dish. Put in the oven at 100 F. Keep the oven heat off. Leave the mix there for the evening.
Heating Pad and Wood Stove
Combine milk (1 quart) and a couple of tablespoons of the yogurt. Set the pad at medium. Place the pad in a box (a shoebox will be all right). Put the mixture in containers and cover them.
Put towels around the containers and leave them there for six hours. For wood stoves, combine a couple of quarts of milk with a cup of yogurt.
Wrap it with a towel. Place it in the back of the wood range to make this homemade yogurt.
Other Ingredients
There are other ingredients you can try when whipping out some yogurt. You can try cinnamon, ginger, or nutmeg. You can add one of these or a combination of them.
You can also try jam or peanut butter flavoring. This should be put in the bottom of the cup. Add the yogurt and milk over it. For fruits, they should be added after the yogurt has incubated.
The flavor you add is entirely up to you. The amounts described here are suggestions. You can add some more if you want. You’ll need to spend some time experimenting to get the flavors you want, but it will be worth it.
Creating homemade yogurt takes some time. It’s true you can buy flavored ones in the store, but making your own has its pluses. You get the exact flavors you want and you can add or remove elements from it the next time you make the yogurt.
